Tame the scaffolding scourge: Too many sidewalk sheds left up for too long are a risk to the public and construction workers, an eyesore and a problem for businesses

As of early this month, there are more than 8,300 scaffolds, known in the industry as sidewalk sheds, throughout the five boroughs — most of which are in Manhattan and Brooklyn. If we put all these scaffolds together, it would measure out to be 1,453,022 total linear feet — a distance great enough to take you from New York City to Baltimore.
