DETROIT — Miguel Cabrera and Austin Romine exchanged blows at homeplate, leading to a benches-clearing brawl at Comerica Park.
The two exchanged words before Cabrera pushed Romine and then delivered a punch, setting off a melee in which Romine tackled Cabrera to the ground.
The incident came after Tommy Kahnle and Joe Girardi were ejected after Kahnle threw behind Cabrera with two outs in the sixth inning.
Gary Sanchez had been hit by Michael Fulmer earlier in the game after hitting a homer off the Detroit righty.
Sanchez appeared to throw a punch in the scrum.
Cabrera had been upset at the Yankees last series, and was angry that his teammates didn’t retaliate after Mikie Mahtook was hit. Fulmer then hit Jacoby Ellsbury.
Romine and Cabrera were both ejected. Romine cursed at the umpiring crew and left the field in a rage.
The on-field antics continued in the seventh inning, when Yankees reliever Dellin Betances was ejected after hitting Tigers catcher James McCann in the helmet with a 98 mph fastball.
