The U.S. informed the United Nations on Friday that it is formally pulling out of the Paris climate accord.
In its letter to the U.N., the State Department said the U.S. remains open to “re-engaging” on the issue.
“The United States supports a balanced approach to climate policy that lowers emissions while promoting economic growth and ensuring energy security,” the State Department said in a statement. The U.S. signed the Paris pledge under former President Barack Obama to reduce dangerous emissions and help slow human-induced climate change.
