This is not Columbus Day

There has been less progress on the commission’s call to create, in the commission’s words, “a large-scale monument to indigenous peoples.” It is to the city’s credit that leaders of the American Indian Community House here have been integrally involved in those discussions, which should focus on the Lenape people, who are one of the original inhabitants of the land on which New York now sits, and the Taino people, Caribbean-based indigenous peoples whose decimation was inaugurated with Columbus’ first voyage.
