Between 1993 and 1998, murders fell by nearly 1,300 and shootings dropped by more the 3,500. Most guns taken off the street in those days were found in searches related to arrests of people for specific crimes. Starting in 1994 and driven by the groundbreaking CompStat process, the NYPD focused on the pattern crimes of robbery, burglary and auto theft as well as on violent areas. This also empowered a new focus on shootings, shooting hotspots and recidivist shooters.
