Stephen Colbert can’t believe we’re still talking about Russia.
The “Late Show” host returned from a weeklong hiatus Monday night and found the conversation eerily similar to when he left.
“But here’s the thing: There is no evidence of collusion, or even the desire to collude with the Russians, by anyone in the Trump campaign … is something that was true 48 hours ago,” he said in his opening monologue, referring to the Sunday New York Times article about Donald Trump Jr. allegedly meeting with a Russian lawyer who promised damaging information about Hillary Clinton.
“I mean, you could knock me over with whatever you use to knock over someone who isn’t the least bit surprised. Everything with this family that you think is, turns out to be,” Colbert said.
“It’s not a smoking gun but it is a gun meeting with a Russian bullet about their mutual desire to smoke.”
Trump Jr., however, had an excuse for the meeting: they were talking about adoption. He also said that he was meeting with an “acquaintance” from the 2013 Miss Universe pageant.
“We’re supposed to believe that, during the height of the presidential campaign, on the advice of a guy he met at the Miss Universe pageant, Don Jr. said ‘hey Jared, Paul, I know you guys are a little busy right now but I need you to come to a meeting.’ ‘With who?’ ‘I don’t know.’ ‘About what?’ ‘I’m not telling you.’ ‘Okay, we’re in,” Colbert mocked.
The “Late Show” host recorded the episode before Monday’s report from the Times that Trump Jr. knew an email that offered intel on the Democratic nominee was part of a Kremlin plot to put Donald Trump in the White House.
