On May 2, 1891, Paul Halliday, a Civil War veteran and widower in his 70s, set off in a horse-drawn cart from his home in Burlingham, N.Y., to a job 10 miles away.

Left home were his new wife, Lizzie, about 40 years his junior, and John, 37, his developmentally disabled son from his first marriage.
