During an up-and-down year, it looks like 2016 will end on a high note for Ryan Lochte.
The 12-time Olympic medalist, who made headlines this summer with his infamous Rio robbery scandal, announced Wednesday that he’s expecting his first child with fiancee Kayla Rae Reid.
“My Christmas gift came early this year, can’t wait for next year! Best news I’ve ever received #CLOUD9 #excited #family #love #2017,” Lochte posted on Instagram, along with an underwater photo of the swimmer kissing the “Playboy” model’s tiny bump.
Reid posted a similar picture with the note “Just when you think you think you have it all figured out, life always surprises you with blessings when least expect it. So excited to share this news with all of you! #weareprego #omg #2017”
Lochte proposed to Reid with a 5-carat engagement ring in October after living together for a month. The 32-year-old said she had been one of his biggest supporters after he admittedly “over-exaggerated” a gas station robbery tale during the Summer Olympics, which resulted in being charged with filing a false police report in Brazil. Lochte became an instant pariah, was handed a 10-month ban by the U.S. Olympic Committee and lost numerous sponsorships.
Reid told paparazzi at the time, “I support him no matter what.”
After returning to the U.S., the swimmer joined the cast of ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars” and worked to rehabilitate his image. Lochte told “People” that Reid, whom he met in January, urged him not to quit the show even after two anti-Lochte protestors stormed the stage.
“That’s what I really learned through everything, being at the lowest point and being able to crawl out of that hole, that dark hole, and keep going,” Lochte told USA TODAY Sports.
