The movement begins, sort of.
“Stars Wars” actor Mark Hamill, whose character is famous for spearheading a resistance movement across the galaxy, is now looking for Americans to resist Donald Trump’s Twitter usage.
Hamill donated to a GoFundMe page made exclusively to take a majority stake of Twitter and ban Trump from the networking site, according to the Hollywood Reporter.
Hamill made one thing certain about the donation — it’s all in jest.
Nevertheless, the campaign has already racked up $ 80,000.
It’s goal, however, is quite lofty: $ 1 billion.
The fundraiser, called “Let’s #BuyTwitter and #BanTrump,” was started by Valerie Wilson of Santa Fe, N.M. She called Trump’s usage of Twitter a matter of life and death, THR reports.
Wilson is also a former CIA member whose focus was on nuclear proliferation issues, THR adds.
The text on the GoFundMe page begins with, “Donald Trump has done a lot of horrible things on Twitter. From remembering white supremacists to promoting violence against journalists, his tweets damage the country and put people in harm’s way. But threatening actual nuclear war with North Korea takes it to a dangerous level. It’s time to shut him down…”
Later, it reads, “If we hit the goal, we’ll use it to become Twitter’s single biggest shareholder and leverage that position to enforce its rules against violent threats, intimidation and hate speech — and shut down Trump for good.”
Further, it says, “If we don’t hit that target but raise a lot of money along the way, we’ll explore options to put forward a strong proposal at the next annual shareholder meeting, use this demonstration of public support to pressure Twitter to take action, and donate 100% of the proceeds to Global Zero, a nonprofit organization leading the resistance to nuclear war. No matter what, I won’t keep a penny of these funds or benefit financially in any way.”
In donating, Hamill tweeted, “…With my #ArmageddonAnxiety growing daily – I donated gladly! #GoodLuckValerie.”
He later wrote, “#BuyTwitter is symbolic & satirical (Raise $ 1B? LOL!) Plus-I WANT him to keep tweeting-it’s all admissable evidence for #TrumpRussia/Mueller.”
The outspoken Trump opponent has been critical of the president’s Twitter usage, which in itself has been condemned by politicians, pundits and others alike.
