Julie Ertz couldn’t hold back her emotions when learning she’d be going to see her husband play in the Super Bowl in two weeks.
The U.S. women’s national soccer team faced Denmark in its first game of the year Sunday at the same time as the NFC Championship game. The midfielder had no idea until after Team USA’s 5-1 win that the Eagles were also victorious and that her husband Zach Ertz was going to the big game.
The moment, which was captured on video, shows Ertz crying, smiling and hugging her teammates.
After the game, Ertz told ESPN she had an idea at halftime the Eagles were doing well but it wasn’t until the final whistle when the 38-7 Eagles victory over the Vikings was confirmed.
“I was kind of looking around for someone to give me confirmation and answers, and I feel like I needed it from at least like three people to make it feel real,” Ertz said. “Yeah, I just got super emotional.”
Ertz had a great game herself for the U.S. women’s team, scoring what ended up being the game-winning goal in the 19th minute against Denmark.
She told ESPN after the game that she got a text from her husband simply saying they were going to the Super Bowl.
“He FaceTimed me right when I got in there,” Ertz said in the locker room. “So, of course, I was again really emotional but super excited.”
Zach Ertz was later shown the video of his wife, and he too couldn’t help but tear up.
“It’s emotional for me, it’s tough not having her here but I can’t wait for her to get home and celebrate with me,” Ertz said.
The tight end led the Eagles with eight catches for 93 yards in Sunday’s home win.
The two were married on March 26, 2017.
While the Ertz couple will enjoy their Sunday wins, it’ll soon be back to business for both as Zach preps for Super Bowl LII against the Patriots and Julie’s squad will get ready to play Germany in March.
