John Amirante, the national anthem singer whose familiar voice filled Madison Square Garden before puck drop for 35 years, died Tuesday morning, the Rangers announced. He was 83.
“It is with great sadness our Rangers family shares the loss of legendary anthem singer John Amirante, who passed away this morning at 83,” the team wrote on Twitter.
“Our thoughts are with his wife Ann, his children and the entire Amirante family. We will forever remember and miss John @TheGarden.”
Amirante, a Rangers fan favorite and fixture of the franchise, ended his run as the team’s go-to anthem performer in 2015, though he later returned for occasional renditions of “The Star-Spangled Banner.”
Last year, he received a huge ovation when he came out to sing the anthem before the Rangers’ Game 4 against the Senators in the Eastern Conference semifinal.
