James Franco opens up about addictive personality in interview

James Franco gets down to the nitty-gritty in a recent interview.

The actor and director, 39, opened up to Out magazine for its September issue and discussed his work on the upcoming HBO series “The Deuce,” along with his personal journey since entering the industry.

“I have a very addictive personality. When I was a teenager I got over certain addictions, and that’s when I started acting, at age 17. I really threw myself into it, and that became everything, to the point where I didn’t even socialize,” Franco said in his candid interview with Out.

“And then after, like, 10 years of that, at age 27, I realized, ‘Man, I’m so depressed.’ On the surface my life seems pretty good — I have a career and everything — but I feel isolated and lonely,” he added.

What did he do to remedy that feeling? Surfing’s one method.

“I’ve started a new chapter of my life. I was very work-addicted, and addicted to other things — not substances, I got over that a long time ago — but I’ve recently changed my life, and this is part of my therapy.”

Franco’s filmography is still packed, as he has multiple films listed for 2017, including “The Disaster Artist” (which is receiving some early Oscar buzz), “The Vault” and “The Long Home,” among many others.

He has other projects listed for 2018, and has also appeared on the small screen in numerous roles.

Speaking of which, his latest series, “The Deuce,” comes to HBO this September.

The drama series comes from the minds of David Simon — executive producer, showrunner and writer of “The Wire” — and frequent collaborator George Pelecanos.

The show is set around Times Square, following the legalization and rise of the porn industry during the 1970s. The show references the growth of HIV and the drug epidemic, among other cultural events.

Franco plays both Vincent and Frankie Martino, twin brothers and fronts for the mob.

He also spoke about sex scenes he directed with Gyllenhaal, his co-star.

“In addition to being just an incredible actress, (she) is fearless, and she really led the charge with how she handled the sex scenes and how she handled herself, and really set the template for everyone else,” Franco told Out.
