Greg Bird could begin rehab assignment soon for Yankees

TORONTO — Encouraged by his progress and how his right ankle feels post-surgery, Greg Bird hopes to begin a minor-league rehab assignment at the end of the Yankees’ next homestand.

Bird hasn’t played for the Yankees since May 1.

Bird took batting practice and fielded grounders on Tuesday at Rogers Centre.

Prior to his injury, the Yankees first baseman wa woeful with the bat, posting just a .100 average with a single home run in 72 plate appearances.

… Joe Girardi said that Aaron Hicks (oblique) is “pretty close” and could be back over the weekend against Boston.

Hicks has moved his minor-league rehab stint to Hartford with Double-A Trenton given its proximity to New York. Triple-A Scranton is in Georgia.
