Detroit police release photos from Chris Cornell’s suicide scene

Detroit police provided a chilling glimpse into the scene of Chris Cornell’s suicide by releasing photos from his hotel room taken shortly after he took his own life.

Authorities made public photos showing the exercise band he allegedly used to hang himself, three prescription pill bottles and blood splattered on the bathroom floor of his suite at the MGM Grand Detroit.

Cornell’s body was not pictured in any of the images.

The Daily News is not publishing the bloody photos due to their sensitive nature. It’s unclear why there was so much blood at the scene. Police said in their comprehensive report released Tuesday that Cornell had “well defined ligature mark present on the neck/throat area.”

The police report also detailed an account from the Soundgarden frontman’s bodyguard, who found Cornell on May 18 shortly after the singer’s wife, Vicky, said her husband didn’t sound right during a phone conversation.

“I went inside and the bathroom door was partially opened, and I could see his feet,” bodyguard Martin Kirsten, told police in a statement obtained by the Detroit Free Press.

Kirsten said he loosened the exercise band from the singer’s neck and began doing chest compressions in an attempt to revive him. More medical professionals arrived, but Cornell was pronounced dead at the age of 52 at around 1:30 a.m.

Cornell’s death was ruled a suicide by hanging by the Wayne County Medical Examiner, and an autopsy report revealedhe had multiple drugs— including a sedative, a decongestant and an anti-overdose medication — in his system at the time of his death. The Medical Examiner’s office concluded that the drugs did not impact on his death, however.

“These drugs did not contribute to the cause of death,” read the autopsy report, which was released on June 2.

But his wife told TMZ last month that she’s convinced Cornell was under the influence when he died.

“We have learned from this report that several substances were found in his system,” she said on the same day the autopsy results went public. “After so many years of sobriety, this moment of terrible judgment seems to have completely impaired and altered his state of mind.”

Cornell’s family had said before the autopsy that they believed he was under the influence at the time of his death and therefore “did not know what he was doing” when he hanged himself.
