“This Is Us” star Chrissy Metz suffered from repeated abuse by her stepfather when she was a child, she details in a new memoir.
Metz’s stepfather — who she refers to as Trigger — often harmed her physically and would make her get on a scale and weigh herself while she was growing up, the actress writes in her upcoming book, “This Is Me,” according to People.
She says her body “seemed to offend” Trigger.
“I don’t remember why Trigger hit me the first time. He never punched my face,” Metz wrote in her book. “Just my body, the thing that offended him so much. He shoved me, slapped me, punched my arm. He would hit me if he thought I looked at him wrong.

“I remember being on the kitchen floor after he knocked me over, and I was begging to know what I did. He just shoved me hard with his foot.”
Metz, 37, writes that she turned to food as a kid as a way of finding temporary happiness. She says Trigger would tease her about needing to place a lock on their refrigerator, and she ultimately began to hide when she ate.
“I’d get up in the middle of the night and eat,” Metz said. “I’d sneak food to eat in the bathroom. Cookies, chips. Things I could eat as fast as possible to avoid detection,” she writes. “Things that would give me the brief bliss of numbness.”
Metz explains that her mother, who separated from her biological father when she was 8, didn’t witness the abuse because she worked so frequently.

She said the unwanted weigh-ins by Trigger began when she was 14.
“By then the beating had escalated. One time he hit me, and I looked right in his face. If I had a gun, I thought, I would shoot you,” Metz wrote.
Metz writes that she loved her stepfather despite what he put her through, and says he has since expressed remorse for their past.
She notes that she has a relationship with Trigger today, and that she’s at peace with her past, saying she’s learned “some beautiful lessons.”
Metz, who portrays Kate Pearson on “This Is Us,” is set to release her book on March 27.
