British mom left young sons alone while she went to Paris

A British mother said “au revoir” to her two young children, leaving them unsupervised while she visited Paris for two days.

The single mother left her two boys, ages 6 and 11, alone with just a pot of soup to eat so that she could plan her wedding to a man she met online, the BBC reported.

She was sentenced to six months in jail, suspended for a year, after admitting to two charges of child neglect.

The woman, who cannot be named to protect her sons’ identities, left for Paris from Manchester Airport in March, a Bradford Crown Court heard, according to the BBC reported.

Her children were left “home alone.”

Prosecutor Philip Adams said the woman intended to fly home the following day, but would not have arrived home until about midnight, according to the BBC.

The younger boy told his teachers that their mother had gone to France, according to the Yorkshire Post. When the school was unable to contact the woman, the boy’s older brother picked him up.

The school alerted the police and placed the boys in a supervised overnight accommodation.

Their mother was arrested when she returned the following day.

She told police she had gone to Paris to make arrangements to get married.

It’s unclear if the man she met online resides in Paris.

She told police she had wanted her kids to stay with a friend while she was gone, but that her older son persuaded her to leave the pair of siblings alone together.

The woman’s attorney, Tom Rushbrooke, said the mother admitted to making a “terrible mistake.” He otherwise defended her parenting skills.

During the sentencing, Judge Robert Bartfield said she had put her children in “significant danger.”

He said it was lucky the children were unharmed.

He suspended her jail sentence for one year because the boys, who had been living in foster care, had only recently returned to living with their mother, according to the Yorkshire Post.

The woman said she still has plans to marry.
