Pop star Aaron Carter lifted “a weight and burden” Saturday when he revealed that he’s attracted to both men and women, and has been since he was 13 years old.
The “I Want Candy” singer, 29, posted an emotional open letter on Twitter Saturday night, and explained to fans that he felt it was finally time to come clean about his feelings, as they’d been weighing on his chest “nearly half my life.”
“This doesn’t bring me shame, just a weight and burden I have held onto for a long time that I would like lifted off of me,” he wrote.
Carter — who, as a teen pop star, was in a high-profile love triangle with Lindsay Lohan and Hilary Duff — wrote that he first began finding both boys and girls attractive when he was 13 years old, but it wasn’t until four years later that he first began to truly explore his sexuality.

“There were years that went by that I thought about it, but it wasn’t until I was 17 years old, after a few relationships with girls, I had an experience with a male that I had an attraction to who I also worked with and grew up with,” he wrote.
Carter, the younger brother of Backstreet Boy Nick Carter, praised music as his “temple” and the studio as his “safe haven” as he explained that his ultimate goal in life is to be satisfied.
“I never want to be a figure of disappointment,” he wrote, before ending the note on a Boy George quote that reads, “I’ve never felt as though I didn’t belong, I just acted as though I did.”
The singer is currently in a relationship with Madison Parker, who was by his side last month when he was arrested in Georgia on suspicion of driving under the influence and possession of marijuana. Parker was arrested as well.

In June, he was hospitalized for exhaustion, and lashed out at fans critical of his thin frame. He revealed in April that his physique was the result of a hiatal hernia diagnosis at 19 that he called “a terrible stress condition” and likened to an eating disorder.
Carter was briefly engaged to former Playboy Playmate Kari Ann Peniche in 2006, but revealed in a bizarre Twitter rant in 2014 that he was still pining for Duff, more than a decade after they ended their relationship.
“Don’t be that stupid d— that loses the love of your life forever,” he wrote after Duff split from husband Mike Comrie. “I’ll spend the rest of my life trying to better myself to get back to her. I don’t care what ANY of you think.”
