A day of Italian and American pride Monday letters Readers sound off on Columbus Day, Kavanaugh and XXX

Manhattan: It’s a sad day in our country when politics trumps democracy and a judge who, by his own intemperate words, is unfit to serve on the highest court, is confirmed. Sen. Jeff Flake flaked. He was never swayed by the pleas of those sexual assault survivors. God help the women (and girls) in Flake’s and Sen. Susan Collins’ families. As a woman, she should feel doubly ashamed to feel the need to give a long speech justifying her yes vote. It astonishes me that the word “fairness” was bandied about after the GOP refused to even open the doors to Merrick Garland. But worst of all had to be a Dem, Joe Manchin, giving a nod to Brett Kavanaugh, which just made a mockery of the whole senatorial process. My faith is shattered. Trump is right in his comparison. The fact that Al Franken was run out of the Senate for minor infractions for which he apologized, while Republicans allow a man I believe would have sexually assaulted a woman sit on the Supreme Court, is a travesty.
