The number of people presumed dead or missing in the tragic Grenfell Tower blaze in London leaped to a staggering 79, police said Monday.
And of that number, only five of the victims have been identified since last week’s devastating fire that ripped through the 24-story high-rise building.
Commander Stuart Cundy with London’s Metropolitan Police fears most of victims will never be identified due to “the intensity of the fire.”
Cundy noted that the death toll may change, speaking from a press conference outside Scotland Yard.
The fire raged for several hours at Grenfell Tower on Wednesday, even as several trapped residents could be heard screaming for help and looking out of windows.
